AI Chat Assistants Compared¶
In one line: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Perplexity are all good general assistants by 2026; choose by the ecosystem you already work in, the jobs you do most, and the data terms you need, then try two side by side for a week. Last reviewed: 2026-10-21
The short version¶
- For most everyday tasks (writing, summarising, brainstorming, explaining) the top assistants are close. Differences show up in specific jobs, integrations and data and admin terms.
- ChatGPT (OpenAI): the broadest feature set and largest user base. Claude (Anthropic): strong at long documents, careful writing, and coding (Claude Code is included in paid plans). Gemini (Google): built into Gmail, Docs and Android, with a cheap entry tier. Microsoft Copilot: built into Windows and Microsoft 365. Perplexity: search-first answers with citations.
- Free tiers are enough to evaluate. Individual paid plans cluster around $20 a month; heavy-use tiers cost $100 or more.
- At work, use the version your employer approves. Consumer plans and business plans have different data terms. See choosing enterprise AI tools.
- If you are brand new, start with pick a chat assistant, which walks you through your first week.

| Claude | Anthropic | Long documents, nuanced writing and editing, coding, projects with shared files, connectors to work tools | Claude apps; Claude Code; connectors to work tools | Free; Pro $20 ($17 billed annually); Max from $100 |

Others worth knowing: Meta AI (in WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger), Grok (xAI, in X), Le Chat (Mistral, a European option), and DeepSeek (Chinese lab, open-weight models; check your organisation's policy on data residency). For the labs behind them, see labs landscape and the model family pages for GPT, Claude, Gemini, Mistral and DeepSeek.

What actually differs¶
Model quality on your task. Public leaderboards (see human preference arenas) show the top models trading places. Your own tasks are a better guide than any leaderboard.
Usage limits. Paid plans are rarely unlimited. Heavy users of the strongest models or of agent features hit limits; that is what the $100+ tiers are for.
Integrations. An assistant that can read your email, calendar and documents saves more time than a slightly smarter one that cannot. Gemini fits Google Workspace, Copilot fits Microsoft 365, and Claude and ChatGPT both offer connectors to common work tools.
Search and freshness. All the major assistants can search the web now. Perplexity is built around it and shows sources by default. Always check citations for anything that matters; see hallucinations.
Data terms. Consumer plans may use your conversations to improve models unless you opt out, and settings differ by product. Business and enterprise plans typically exclude training on your data and add admin controls, retention settings and single sign-on. Read the current privacy terms, not a blog summary.
Pick X if...¶
- Pick ChatGPT if you want one assistant that does a bit of everything, especially voice, images and a large library of community-made custom assistants.
- Pick Claude if you work with long documents, write or edit for a living, or code; the Pro plan also includes Claude Code.
- Pick Gemini if your life runs on Gmail, Google Docs and Android, or you want the cheapest paid tier (AI Plus).
- Pick Microsoft Copilot if your organisation runs on Microsoft 365 and has licensed it; it can work across your company's documents and meetings.
- Pick Perplexity if most of your questions are research questions where you want to see sources.
- Use two if you can: many people keep one general assistant and one specialist (a search tool, or a coding tool).
A one-week bake-off¶
- Write down 10 tasks you actually did last week: an email reply, a summary of a long report, a spreadsheet formula, a meeting prep, a tricky explanation, a piece of writing to edit, a research question, and so on.
- Run each task in two assistants on their free tiers with the same prompt.
- Score each result: usable as-is, usable after light edits, or not usable. Note time saved and any errors.
- Check the facts in at least three answers yourself.
- Pay for the one that won on your tasks. Revisit in six months; the gap moves.
The habits that make any assistant better are in prompt engineering and AI for everyone.
Common mistakes¶
- Pasting confidential work data into a personal account. Use the approved business tool. See acceptable use policy.
- Trusting confident answers without checking. All assistants still invent facts, citations and numbers sometimes.
- Switching every month. Gains from learning one tool well usually beat gains from switching.
- Paying for the top tier on day one. Start free or on the $20 tier; upgrade only when you hit limits.
